The African Traditional Marriage

What we normally call Traditional Marriage in time past was just the common marriage and only form of marriage known in Africa.

Following the spread of Christianity as a result of colonization the concept of traditional marriage, white marriage and court marriage were born.

Despite these new developments traditional marriage never lost its importance in African tradition and is still regarded as a very important step that cannot be avoided.

In some African countries if the couple is living abroad, the traditional marriage will still be performed even in their absence by the family members back home. This is to show how crucial it is!

In each country the traditional marriage is performed in various ways but the basic of this ceremony is that the family of the groom will meet the family of the bride asking for her hand in marriage for their son. In most cases a price must be paid by the groom’s family. The bride price is mostly a symbolic amount but in some cultures the groom’s family have to be ready to pay a hefty fine!

But the most amazing part of the traditional marriages is the colors and richness of the couple’s attire displayed during the ceremony. The variety of materials, designs, combinations and shaded involved to make the ceremony a success will amaze you. Most times the couple will change the outfit more than two times during the special day.

This is a legacy that will never be abandoned even by the young generations because is just too beautiful and unique!
